About pilates

Pilates is a full body exercise program developed over 90 years ago by legendary physical trainer, Joseph Pilates.  It is a series of more than 500 controlled movements engaging the body and mind, performed on mats and specifically designed exercise apparatus developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s.  The Pilates program improves  muscle control and balance, builds strength/tone and flexibility, increases coordination, and improves body alignment and posture through physical and mental conditioning.

All of the exercises use the abdomen, lower back, inner/outer thighs and buttocks as a power center (the ‘powerhouse’), enabling the rest of the body to move freely working muscle groups with coordinated effort through their full range of motion in a sequence of carefully performed movements.

Emphasizing increased complexity of simple movement patterns as the client gains strength and control, Pilates requires few repetitions with complete concentration of the mind on each movement and breath.  Overall, it is a lifelong fitness regime available to everyone that combines stretching and strengthening exercises designed to work the entire body in fluid movements.
